The 'Sea Venture' was on route from Plymouth, England, to James Town, North Carolina, under the command of Admiral Sir George Somers in 1609 when a hurricane blew her off course. The ship suffered from severe damage from the storm and was grounded half a mile off of the east end of the island. All of the crew made it to land and were Bermuda's first settlers. A replica of the 'Sea Venture' and a statue of Admial Sir George Somers are displayed in the Town of St. George's.
