Fort St. Catherine is one of the oldest and largest of Bermuda’s coastal fortifications. Started soon after the first permanent colonization of Bermuda, a small masonry tower was constructed to guard the original landing site at Gate’s Bay on the northern most point of St. George’s island. After over 300 years as an active fortification, Fort St. Catherine was converted in the 1950s into a museum dedicated to military and cultural history in Bermuda. In 2001 the historical importance of Fort St. Catherine was in part recognized with the designation of the Town of St. George and Related Fortifications as a world heritage site.
