Founded in the 1790’s, Hamilton has served as Bermuda’s capital since 1815 and is the island’s administrative and government centre. It is also home to the island’s financial and insurance industries and is the primary shopping and dining district.
A roster of popular events makes full use of the city's compact size and harbour-side location. Sports fans can take in annual world class sporting events including Gold Cup sailing and Grand Prix cycling. City streets are transformed into parade routes on May 24th and Veterans Day and when the children of Bermuda clamour to see Santa at the annual Christmas Parade. Another very popular holiday event is the Boat Parade typically held the first or second Saturday in December.
Front Street is also the venue for Harbour Nights – Bermuda’s street festival in the capital held every Wednesday night in the summer. Enjoy live music and the offerings of food vendors, face painters, artists and crafters. Many Front Street stores remain open during Harbour Nights so you can enjoy a bit of late night shopping as well.
Taxi service is readily available throughout Hamilton. The Hamilton bus depot is located on the eastern side of City Hall just off Church Street. Ferry service is available from the terminal next to the Visitor’s Service Bureau on Front Street.
